Creatures of the Wind was founded in 2008, by Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters. Both are graduates of The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. After graduation, Gabier moved to Antwerp, Belgium, where he worked under Jurgi Persoons. Upon returning to Chicago, he met Peters, who was a studio assistant to the artist Nick Cave. The first collections were project-based and concept driven, leading to the first full collection in Spring 2011.
The label’s name is taken from the song, Wild is the Wind, first performed by Johnny Mathis in 1957.
In 2011, Gabier and Peters were named runners-up in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. They were honored as Fashion Group International’s Rising Stars in 2011. In 2012 and in 2013, they were nominees for the CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear, and were the winners of the prize in 2014. They were finalists in the International Woolmark Prize in 2013, and were one of 30 international brands to be shortlisted for the 2014 LVMH Prize.
In 2013, Creatures of the Wind was named as one of WWD’s Ten of Tomorrow, as well as being listed as one the industry’s top designer labels in Business of Fashion’s BoF 500 every year since 2013.
Collections are inspired by music, the language of culture, and ideas of identity.
The entirety of the collection is manufactured in the United States.
Creatures of the Wind is sold at directional retail outlets internationally.
